Maker plate names Samuel Collet of Gore Coach building. The NZ Gazette mentions the business taking vehicle to agricultural shows in 1894. This style of cart was developed in Cape town for a light vehicle that moves well with two horses, where young men liked to impress the girls with their driving skills. The Fashion moved on to Europe and NZ where this one was built. Normally pulled by two horses, if steep streets were anticipated four were hitched up. The traces are attached to a set of swingle trees, Whipple trees, or eveners. This arrangement was developed for the Concord Coaches used by Cobb & Co. The advantage is that when trotting the movement of one horse does not disturb the one next to it. If one horse tries to be lazy and not do his share of the pulling the trees evens them up.
