Including: Ian Botham, Gundappa Viswanath, Bishan Bedi, Mike Gatting, Bob Taylor, Phil Edmonds, Geoff Boycott, John Emburey, Ian Gould England toured India (and Sri Lanka), under captain Tony Greig, with Bishan Singh Bedi captaining India. England won the five-Test series 3-1. Dennis Amiss was England's leading run-scorer with 417, Tony Greig contributed 342, and Alan Knott chipped in 268; for India, Sunil Gavaskar led with 394 and throughout the series defied a strong England attack culminating with a gritty 103 not out in the final Bombay test. With the ball, Derek Underwood took 29 wickets and John Lever 26 for England, while Bedi (25), Chandrasekhar (19) and Prasanna (18) led India's attack. Lever's first-innings bowling figures of 7 for 46 remain the best figures by an England bowler on Test debut, and he finished the tour with 26 wickets at an average of just 14.61 — one of the greatest ever debut series. During the series, Indian captain Bishan Bedi accused Lever and the England camp of ball-tampering, alleging Vaseline had been used to help the ball swing — a charge that made headlines and stirred hostility amongst players and supporters alike. In the third Test at Madras, Bedi became the first Indian player to take 200 Test wickets — a genuine career milestone, even though the match and series were slipping away from India by that point. Middlesex v Yorkshire Gillette Cup 1979 -These two teams featured hardened England players and West Indian superstars. Middlesex beat Yorkshire in the Gillette Cup quarter-final at Lord's, played over 8–9 August 1979 (scheduled for one day but extended to two). The win over Yorkshire sent Middlesex into the semi-final, where their cup run ended: Middlesex lost the semi-final to Somerset at Lord's on 22 August 1979 by 7 wickets, with Somerset chasing down Middlesex's 185 in 50.2 overs. Phil Edmonds top-scored for Middlesex with 63, while Joel Garner took 4 for 24; for Somerset, Peter Denning made an unbeaten 90 and was named Player of the Match, with Viv Richards also contributing 32.
