Five-Test Ashes series played in England. drawn 2–2, meaning Australia retained the Ashes. 1st Test, Old Trafford: Australia won by 159 runs. 2nd Test, Lord's: Drawn. 3rd Test, Edgbaston: Drawn. 4th Test, Headingley: Drawn. 5th Test, The Oval: England won by 226 runs — but it was already a dead rubber, Australia having retained the urn. The Oval Test is historically significant for one innings — Basil D'Oliveira's match-winning 158. His performance played directly into his selection for England's planned 1968–69 tour of South Africa, which the apartheid government objected to given his classification as ‘Cape Coloured.’ The resulting cancellation of that tour became known as the D'Oliveira Affair, a pivotal moment in sport's role in the anti-apartheid movement and a major factor in South Africa's subsequent sporting isolation. Key names: John Edrich was Player of the Series with 554 runs. Basil D'Oliveira is the defining name of this series given the off-field consequences of his innings.
