Lot Details

Including: Terry Alderman, Geoff Lawson, Ray Phillips, Andrew Hildich, Craig McDermott, David Gower, Graham Gooch, Mike Gatting. This was the Ashes series in which England regained the urn, powered by David Gower's finest season as captain. Australia toured England in 1985 to play a six-match Test series, which England won 3–1 with two matches drawn. England went into the summer with the ‘1982 South African rebels’ (Gooch, Emburey and Willey) back in the fold, having served their bans, plus Ian Botham available after a self-imposed break from the winter's India tour giving David Gower's side much-needed balance and strength. There was real pressure on Gower personally, too after an ‘atrocious’ 1984 series against West Indies and a modest tour of India, he arrived at the Ashes under scrutiny. In the first Test at Headingley England won by 5 wickets with Ian Botham and Tim Robinson starring. The second test saw an inspired Australian victory with Alan Border leading by example. The third and fourth tests at Trent Bridge and Old Trafford were both drawn with Gower, Mike Gatting and Border all among the runs. In the fifth Test at Edgbaston England won by an innings and 118 runs. Richard Ellison had outstanding bowling figures and Gower and opener Tim Robinson put on 331, the second-highest England partnership ever against Australia, before further centuries from Gatting and a rapid Botham cameo built a commanding total. Ellison then took 4 for 27 as Australia were bowled out for 142 second time around giving England victory. The sixth Test at The Oval was drawn with Gooch and Gower sharing a colossal second-wicket partnership of 351 on the opening day, effectively ending Australia's hopes. England, led by Gower's magnificent double-century along with centuries from Robinson and Gatting, declared on 595; Ellison again impressed, and with England needing only to avoid defeat to regain the Ashes, the match petered into the draw that sealed the series 3-1 Gower's summer was a personal triumph with 732 runs across the series, capped by the Oval double-century. A 20-year-old Craig McDermott impressed for Australia despite the series loss, taking 8 for 141 in a single innings at Old Trafford (every wicket to fall in that innings) and finishing with 30 wickets for the tour — a genuine breakout campaign for the young paceman and future star.
