Engraved: ‘Hawkes Bay Rifle Association, Won by Sergt L. Redward N.E.V, First Annual Meeting, 3rd Match 1st Prize, 15 shots 50 points. Presented by W.A. Shanly, Maker, Napier'. 83.8gms. 70 x 130mm. Some small dents to body. The Napier Engineers Volunteers existed for a very short 1878 to 1879* when the company converted to a Rifle Company, hence the Napier Rifle Volunteers which had disbanded in 1874 was reformed. These companies were the precursor to the Hawkes Bay Regiment. * https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/HBH18790503.2.11 Redward shot for the Hawkes Bay Rifle Assn in the 1880s and was granted first life member of the Woodville Rifle Club 1896 as an 'Old Shot' and donor of a silver trophy. Shanly (1837-1911) was a Napier manufacturing jeweller in Tennyson St.
