Engraved: "Hawkes Bay Rifle Association, Won by Sergt L. Redward N.E.V, First Annual Meeting, 3rd Match 1st Prize, 15 shots 50 points. Presented by W.A. Shanly, Maker, Napier". Two fine nail holes. See following lot The Napier Engineers Volunteers existed for a very short 1878 to 1879* when the company converted to a Rifle Company, hence the Napier Rifle Volunteers which had disbanded in 1874 was reformed. These companies were the precursor to the Hawkes Bay Regiment. * https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/HBH18790503.2.11 Redward shot for the Hawkes Bay Rifle Assn in the 1880s and was granted first life member of the Woodville Rifle Club 1896 as an 'Old Shot' and donor of a silver trophy. Shanly (1837-1911) was a Napier manufacturing jeweller in Tennyson St.
