Alfred (known as Bate) Walter Herman Leaman, (26 July 1888 - 26 Nov 1986) Christchurch, Tpr. Canty. Mtd. Rifles. WW1 7/358 NZEF, 2/Lieut., Egypt and Gallipolli. WW2 3/17/1690 2/Lieut HQ Staff, Ajt and QM 2NZEF Lot comprises: WW1/WW2 group - (i) 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, (ii) paybook, dog tags, ANZAC Medallion and 7/358 RSA (85) pin, (iii) 1939-45 War Medal and NZ Service Medal, (iv) plus WW1 NZE cap badge & collar insignia, (v) and trio of miniatures - 18/62 GSM Malaya clasp, 62/07 GSM Malay Peninsula & Borneo Clasps and NZGSM. Reference: The History of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles 1914. Chapter IV. Of the Desperate August Fighting and the Move to New Country. - Leaman is mentioned as an Anzac sharpshooter selected to assist the British IX Corps, Suvla Bay troops to help in the instruction of their men. Note: Sharpshooting or sniping became incredibly important in the campaign: “… snipers posted throughout the valley, placed a barrier as impenetrable as any earthwork…’ Gallipoli, The New Zealand Story. Christopher Pugsley (2014) pg 241. Leaman’s brother Lewis Maurice 7/359 (enlisted same day) was KIA on Walkers Ridge, Gallipoli on 14 July 1915.
