William (Henry) Buckles (2 Feb 1891 - 15 Jan 1929) Otago. WWI 10/1127 Sergt. NZ Medical Corps, Main Body. No.4 Field Ambulance Lot contains: 14-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal Mentioned in Despatches by F.M Sir D.Haig 7 Nov 1917 'for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty. London Gazette 28 Dec 1917 iss. 30488. ‘good service and devotion to duty in the field. Did excellent work attending to wounded at A.D.S (Advanced Dressing Station) near Ploegsteert (Flanders, Belgium), where the A.D.S was frequently shelled. As an N.C.O is most keen in the carrying out of his duties and is a good disciplinarian. ‘ Discharged 21 January 1919. Buried Karori Soldier's Cemetery. (William's brother James (Jim) also served and died in France: L/Cpl James Buckles (served as MORROW) 2621 Australian Infantry, A.I.F. 46th Bn.
